Our fellow Bernard Akoi-Jackson curated a group exhibition, Beyond Maps, at DeLa's Inn in Accra, Ghana.
“Beyond Maps” is an exhibition of interdisciplinary art by a loose collective of artists from and connected to blaxTARLINES-KNUST who treat exhibition-making as an integral part of their practice. The show hearkens back to group works by the KNUST Painting & Sculpture class of 2023 (2023-24), to Base Projects’ artist-led initiatives at the National Museum and Science & Technology Museum of Ghana (2023-24), and to blaxTARLINES's seminal group shows from Kumasi to Accra (2015-17).
For this second edition of “Beyond Maps”—a meeting point of several tributaries—artists “test the limits of their freedom” and explore unbounded ideas, forms and materials (kąrî’kạchä seid’ou). They likewise go off-grid from established institutional venues, and return to blaxTARLINES’s efforts to rehabilitate alternative spaces. From market spaces to mythology to menstrual cramps; from painting to collage to tapestry to skateboards; from portraiture to poetry to polyvocality; projects interrogate the plastic possibilities of their subjects and mediums. They go “beyond” the bounded norms of genres and geographies, and explore networked, hybrid and shifting relations.
You can see the exhibition until 22 December
